After tossing a no-hitter, Chicago Cubs righthander Carlos Zambrano on Monday. Was named the National League Player of the Week.

Making his first start on Sunday since September 2 due to tendinitis in his right shoulder, Zambrano struck out 10 batters and walked one against the Houston Astros in the relocated game at Milwaukees Miller Park on Sunday night.

The 27-year-old righthanders no-hitter was the first by a Cub since Milt Pappas threw one against the San Diego Padres on September 2, 1972, at Wrigley Field. In leading the Cubs to the 5-0 victory, the three-time N.L. All-Star also helped his own cause at the plate with a single and a run scored as part of Chicagos four-run third inning.

The outing was Zambranos eighth career complete game and third career shutout, including his first since May 7, 2004, against Colorado. He is now 14-5 with a 3.41 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 28 starts.

Also considered for the honor were New York Mets teammates Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Jon Niese, Fernando Tatis and David Wright.

Cabrera, Gomez share AL Player of the Week honors.

Cleveland Indians second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera and Minnesota Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez on Monday were named the co-winners of the American League Player of the Week Award.

Cabrera hit .455 (10-for-22) with three doubles, a home run and eight RBI last week. He had three-multi hit performances over the eight games en route to a slugging percentage of .727.

The 22-year-old Cabrera, who is batting .247 with five blasts and 38 RBI this season, went 6-for-12 and drove in six runs during the Indians four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles from September 8-11.

Gomez batted .333 (7-for-21) with a pair of doubles, a triple and 10 RBI last week. He drove in at least one run in each of his six games over the week.

The 22-year-old Gomez, who is batting .254 with six homers, 51 RBI and 30 steals, drove in a career-high four runs in the first game of a doubleheader against the Orioles on Saturday.

Both players received the weekly honor for the first time in their career.

Other nominees included New Yorks Derek Jeter, Torontos Lyle Overbay and A.J. Burnett, Baltimores Oscar Salazar and Bostons Jon Lester.
