MONTREAL 3, CAROLINA 2 (SO)

MONTREAL Captain Saku Koivu scored in the second round of the shootout and Carey Price made 31 saves as the Montreal Canadiens posted a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

In the shootout, Koivu backhanded the puck between the pads of Cam Ward and Price preserved the victory by denying Ray Whitney with a glove save to help the Canadiens beat the Hurricanes for the first time in 10 tries in Montreal.

Alexei Kovalev and Alex Tanguay scored in regulation for the Canadiens.

Defenseman Anton Babchuk and Matt Cullen also tallied Ward turned aside 23 shots for the Hurricanes.

CALGARY 3, COLORADO 0

CALGARY, Alberta Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all 22 shots he faced and the Calgary Flames scored three times in the third period to record a 3-0 triumph over the Colorado Avalanche.

Rene Bourque and Michael Cammalleri notched a goal and an assist apiece and Curtis Glencross also tallied for Calgary, which has won four in a row.

Kiprusoff stopped 13 shots in the first, seven in the second and two in the third to record his first shutout of the season and 27th career.

Peter Budaj stopped 27 shots for Colorado, which saw its five-game winning streak come to an end.

TAMPA BAY 3, TORONTO 2

TORONTO Captain Vincent Lecavalier netted a pair of goals as the Tampa Bay Lightning recorded a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Jussi Jokinen also scored for Tampa Bay (2-3-3), which earned its second win in eight contests. The top overall pick in Junes draft, Steven Stamkos registered his first career point when he set up Lecavaliers second tally with the man advantage.

Vaclav Prospal had two assists to help support goaltender Mike Smith, who made 37 saves and even notched an assist.

Matt Stajan and defenseman Mike Van Ryn netted a power-play goal apiece for the Maple Leafs, who fell to 19-8-1 all-time at home against the Lightning.

BOSTON 1, VANCOUVER 0

VANCOUVER, British Columbia Tim Thomas stopped all 31 shots he faced to notch his second consecutive shutout and Michael Ryder scored a first-period goal as the Boston Bruins held on for a 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Thomas turned aside 11 shots in the first, seven in the second and 13 in the third en route to his second shutout of the season and ninth career. He made 27 saves in a 1-0 overtime victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday.

Ryder converted passes from Marco Sturm and Marc Savard with 9:44 left in the first and beat captain Roberto Luongo, who made 29 saves for the Canucks.

WASHINGTON 4, NASHVILLE 3 (SO)

WASHINGTON Michael Nylander scored in the fourth round of the shootout and Jose Theodore turned aside three of four attempts in the bonus format as the Washington Capitals defeated the Nashville Predators, 4-3.

Alexander Semin collected a goal and an assist and scored in the bonus format and David Steckel added a shorthanded tally for the Capitals.

Theodore made 14 of his 23 saves in the third period while Predators goaltender Dan Ellis finished with 29 saves.

Jason Arnott scored a pair of goals and J.P. Dumont had three assists for Nashville.

PHILADELPHIA 7, ATLANTA 0

ATLANTA Mike Knuble, Simon Gagne and Joffrey Lupul each scored two goals to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 7-0 rout of the Atlanta Thrashers.

Glen Metropolit also tallied and Antero Niittymaki continued his success against Atlanta, making 24 saves for his fourth career shutout. Niittymaki improved to 10-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average in his career against the Thrashers.

Lupul opened the scoring 80 seconds into the game and Knuble and Gagne each tallied in the middle session to make it 3-0.

Knuble and Lupul scored 37 seconds apart in the third period and Gagne added his second tally with 12 minutes to play to extend the lead to 6-0. Metropolit capped the scoring with his first goal of the season with 2:40 remaining in the contest.

SAN JOSE 2, PITTSBURGH 1

SAN JOSE, California Evgeni Nabokov maintained his dominance of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Mike Grier scored in the third period as the San Jose Sharks posted a 2-1 victory.

Nabokov made 10 saves as he upped his career record to 7-1-0 against the Penguins. The Sharks remained perfect at HP Pavilion, now boasting a 5-0-0 record.

With veteran defenseman Rob Blake off for tripping, Joe Pavelski slipped a backhander through the pads of Dany Sabourin midway through the first period for his fourth goal of the season.

The Sharks doubled the lead when Grier scored his first of the season at 7:08 of the third period. Defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Dan Boyle controlled the puck in a four-on-four situation. Ehrhoff found Grier and the right wing made a nice move before beating Sabourin with a backhand.

The Penguins responded with some crisp passing before Ruslan Fedotenko scored off assists from captain Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin with 5:33 remaining.
