Washington goalie Jose Theodore kept the game alive with a sprawling save on a point-blank shot by Kessel with 18 seconds left in overtime. A wild exchange in the third period led to the extra session.
Boston took a 3-2 lead 10:41 into the third when Krejci put in a rebound for his second goal of the game, but the Capitals tied it about two minutes later on Mike Greens slap shot from just inside the blue line.
