NEW ORLEANS 106, GOLDEN STATE 103

NEW ORLEANS David West scored 19 points and Hilton Armstrong added 14 off the bench as the New Orleans Hornets opened their preseason slate with a 106-103 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Chris Paul had 13 points and six assists for the Hornets, who had one of the best seasons in franchise history in 2007-08, securing the second seed in the tough Western Conference before losing to the San Antonio Spurs in the conference semifinals.

An All-Star duo last season when the game was played at New Orleans Arena, West and Paul were in fine form in this one, combining to shoot 14-of-16 from the field.

Newcomer James Posey, who was a key cog off the bench for the defending champion Boston Celtics, scored nine points on 4-of-7 shooting for New Orleans, which hopes to use the versatile forward in a similar role.

While the Hornets should be one of the top teams in the West, the Warriors are just trying to stay afloat in the ultra-competitive conference. Golden State had a tumultuous offseason, which included the departure of star guard Baron Davis in free agency and an injury to guard Monta Ellis.

Newly acquired Corey Maggette, who signed a five-year, $50 million deal in the offseason, scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting for Golden State, which started seldom-used C.J. Watson thanks to the turmoil in its backcourt.

Sharpshooter Marco Belinelli, who also impressed in the preseason last October, scored 14 points while newcomer Ronny Turiaf collected six and seven rebounds off the bench for the Warriors.

DETROIT 95, MIAMI 91 (OT)

MIAMI Rodney Stuckey had 23 points and five assists to lead the Detroit Pistons past the Miami Heat, 95-91, in overtime, the opening night of the NBA preseason.

Jason Maxiell opened up the extra period with back-to-back buckets to stake the Pistons to a slim lead, and they hung on from there.

Stuckey, a second-year player who averaged 7.7 points in his rookie campaign, buried a 12-foot jumper with 2.1 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 86-86 but fouled out in the first minute of overtime.

However, the Pistons scored the first six points of the extra period and held on for the win. Fifteen seconds into the frame, Maxiell knocked down a mid-range shot and drew a foul, though he missed the ensuing free throw. On the next possession, he buried a turnaround jumper to give Detroit a four-point cushion.

The fourth-year forward finished with 13 points and Richard Hamilton chipped in with 12 on 5-of-8 shooting for the Pistons.

The second overall pick in the 2008 draft, rookie Michael Beasley led the Heat with 16 points, including 13 in the third quarter. He showed off a variety of nifty moves around the basket. The 6-9, 235-pound forward also had six rebounds in 21 minutes.

Heat superstar Dwyane Wade scored 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting with seven assists and three steals in 22 minutes.

Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups scored six points in 23 minutes but was responsible for six of the teams 24 turnovers.

The Pistons led by as many as 12 in the first half until the Heat went on an 18-4 run in the second quarter, with veteran center Mark Blount scoring seven straight points.
