The St Louis Blues defense corps is taking a beating.

The St Louis Blues defense corps is taking a beating. Even before the regular season has started.

One week after former top overall pick Erik Johnson suffered a season-ending knee injury, fellow blue-liner Jeff Woywitka suffered a cracked bone in his right foot, according to a report by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Tuesday.

Woywitka suffered the injury while blocking a shot in St. Louis 9-4 preseason victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday. The 25-year-old, who had two goals and six assists in 26 games with the Blues last season, is expected to be sidelined up to a month.

Drafted 27th overall by Philadelphia in 2001, Woywitka has recorded three goals, 14 assists and 49 penalty minutes in 87 career NHL games - all with St. Louis.

From one end of the spectrum to the other in a short period of time, Blues defenseman Steve Wagner told the newspaper. We dont need any more injuries.

The first overall pick in the 2006 draft, Johnson, 20, tore both his ACL and MCL in an incident on a golf course involving a cart on September 23.

I dont look at it like Erik (Johnson). Thats long-term, St. Louis president John Davidson told the Post-Dispatch. Im not going to say, Its another tough break. Were not saying that. Its an unfortunate injury because Jeff got himself into good shape and he had an opportunity.

St. Louis opens the season at home on October 10 against the Nashville Predators.
